Four Years, Countless Lessons: My Journey Through Economics, Tech, and Beyond
When I first set foot on campus as an undergraduate in economics, I had little idea of the transformative journey that awaited me. Now, as I near the completion of my degree, I find myself reflecting on the experiences, challenges, and unexpected opportunities that have shaped my path.
Why Economics?
Choosing economics was a conscious decision—one that allowed me to blend my love for logical thinking, numerical reasoning, and mathematics with a field that offers deep insights into the world around us. It was an alternative to engineering, which never quite piqued my interest, and provided me with an opportunity to apply my analytical skills in a broader context.
A Multifaceted Academic Experience
My academic journey was far from linear. While economics formed the core of my studies, I explored multiple disciplines through minors in Machine Learning and Industrial & Management Engineering (IME). These courses, along with electives from departments like Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, helped me develop a versatile skill set that extended beyond my primary field.
Discovering a Passion for Tech
While I found economics fascinating, my interest in programming and data science grew stronger over time. I delved into data structures, algorithms, and machine learning, which eventually played a crucial role in shaping my career aspirations.
Cracking CAT With a Unique Approach
One of the most surprising milestones in my journey was scoring a near-perfect percentile in the CAT (Common Admission Test) with a less than ten-day prep time. Unlike the conventional approach of rigorous preparation, I relied on my natural aptitude for mathematics and logical reasoning, taking only a handful of mock tests to familiarize myself with the exam format. For anyone preparing for CAT, my biggest advice would be to focus on test-taking strategy—knowing which questions to attempt and which to skip can make all the difference.
Why Not an MBA—For Now?
Despite my success in CAT, I chose not to pursue an MBA immediately. My goal is to establish myself in the tech industry, and I realized that an MBA might not align with my aspirations at this stage. While an MBA remains a future possibility, my focus for now is on gaining hands-on experience in data science and technology.
The Rollercoaster of Placements
Placements were a whirlwind. I spent months preparing for software roles, only to find myself shortlisted for every profile except software. It was an unexpected twist, but one that led me to data science, the field I was most excited about.
Life Beyond Academics
College life isn’t just about academics and placements—it’s about experiences that shape you as a person. Serving as the Head of the Economics Society, organizing marketing efforts for Antaragni (IIT Kanpur’s cultural fest), and working as a coordinator at the Student Placement Office allowed me to develop leadership and organizational skills. Outside of structured activities, I spent countless hours playing badminton, cricket, and basketball, and indulging in my love for novels and video games.
The Friendships That Matter Most
Perhaps the most invaluable part of my college journey has been the friendships I’ve built. Through the highs of winning inter-hostel championships and the lows of placement rejections, my friends have been my strongest support system. Looking back, I realize that while achievements and accolades are significant, it’s the people you share them with who truly make them worthwhile.
Looking Ahead
As I step into the next phase of my career, I remain open to new possibilities. Whether it's deepening my expertise in tech, exploring startup ideas, or even reconsidering an MBA down the line, I know that my journey is just beginning. And yes, I do have a dream of buying a luxury car someday—but more than that, I aspire to build a career that challenges and excites me every step of the way.
For anyone navigating their own academic and professional path, my advice is simple: stay curious, embrace change, and never underestimate the power of persistence and a strong support system.
Here’s to the next adventure!
