Finding My Path in Robotics at IIT Kanpur
21 May, 2025 | Student Glory
Hi, I’m Manvi, a third-year undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur. Originally from Mumbai, my journey into engineering, and more specifically into robotics, has been shaped by a blend of early curiosity, hands-on learning, and a supportive campus ecosystem.
The Spark: Robotics in School
My fascination with robotics began back in school while I was living in Bangalore. We had a robotics lab equipped with LEGO kits, and working with them gave me my first real taste of building and programming machines. That initial exposure led me to participate in the 2016 RoboCup in Leipzig, Germany, a moment that truly lit the spark.
While academics took precedence during my JEE preparation, the interest in robotics never faded. So when I joined IIT Kanpur, I naturally gravitated towards the Robotics Club and the Students Motorsports team. These gave me the chance to apply theory to practice and continue exploring what I love.
Learning by Building
At IITK, I’ve had the opportunity to work on various interdisciplinary projects that blend electronics, mechanics, and intelligent systems. Some highlights:
- Worked at the Mobile Robotics Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department for two months
- Led the Robotics Club, helping organize workshops, mentor juniors, and compete in inter-IIT and national competitions
- Participated in the World Robotics Championship, TechFest at IIT Bombay, and the Inter-IIT Tech Meet, where our club won two bronze medals in autonomous and mechanical problem statements
Each of these experiences helped me grow not just technically, but also as a leader and teammate.
Academics and Application
The Electrical Engineering curriculum here has been rigorous but deeply rewarding. I have had the chance to work on core projects involving manufacturing and electronics, which directly tie into the real-world robotics challenges I have faced in club activities.
What makes IITK special is the seamless link between theory and application. I have been lucky to find really passionate professors and peer support that have made the learning journey intellectually rich and personally fulfilling.
Life Outside the Lab
Robotics may be my academic passion, but swimming is my daily ritual. I have been swimming since the third grade and continued at IITK, where we have a fantastic 50-meter pool, an encouraging coach, and a warm and established team culture. It helps me stay grounded, manage stress, and maintain balance amidst a busy schedule.
Looking Ahead
I plan to pursue a Master’s in Robotics, with Carnegie Mellon University as my dream destination. While I did briefly explore corporate avenues through internship programs with firms like JPMorgan and Barclays, I realized that research is where my true interests lie.
Reflections on Campus Life
Over these three years, my biggest personal transformation has been in terms of confidence. Initially, I felt the pressure of being surrounded by brilliant minds. But through persistence and curiosity, I found my place - learning, leading, and growing.
The freedom and student-driven culture at IIT Kanpur allow you to carve your own path. This place place allows you to do as much as you want to with restricting or dictating. Everything is student run and the trust placed in students here is empowering.
If there is one thing I will take with me after graduating, it’s the friendships and community I have built. Moving across cities in my early life taught me how precious meaningful connections are, and IIT Kanpur has been exceptional.
