Ambient Air Quality Monitoring over Rural Areas using Indigenous Technology (AMRIT)

29 Nov, 2024 | Research & Innovation

Professor Sachidanand Tripathi has developed India's largest air quality network, titled “Ambient Air Quality Monitoring over Rural Areas using Indigenous Technology (AMRIT)”. This project aims to set up a dense sensor network across the states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh to monitor air quality, particularly in rural areas. The endeavor began in June 2022 with the fabrication of Sensor Ambient Air Quality Monitors (SAAQM), including pilot testing of 8 SAAQMs at IIT Kanpur, followed by colocation-calibration of SAAQMs at test beds in IIT Kanpur. As part of the AMRIT project, a data visualization dashboard was developed to provide an interactive and detailed view of the air quality data collected by the SAAQM network. This dashboard is designed with restricted access to ensure that only authorized users, such as policymakers, environmental authorities, and researchers, can interact with it. The SAAQM network of Bihar, along with the data visualization dashboard, was officially inaugurated by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Bihar on March 4, 2024. The inauguration took place at the Bihar Climate Conclave in Patna. The monthly and seasonal analysis of PM2.5 data from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh has provided significant insights into air quality trends, with a focus on identifying pollution patterns and their potential sources. The SAAQM data is proving to be a powerful tool not only for monitoring air quality but also for conducting detailed analyses that have direct implications for public health, environmental policy, and sustainable development. By exploring the dynamics of urban-rural pollution differences, the effects of specific events like Diwali, and other key factors, the team under the CoE-ATMAN is contributing crucial insights to improve air quality management in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This initiative represents a significant step toward better environmental monitoring and management in India, utilizing indigenous technological solutions to tackle air quality issues at a large scale.
