IIT Kanpur Develops Eco-Friendly Graphite Anode from Waste Dry Cells
15 Aug, 2025 | Research & Innovation
In a major breakthrough toward sustainable energy and circular economy goals, IIT Kanpur researchers have patented a novel method to convert discarded dry cell graphite rods into high-performance anodes for batteries and supercapacitors. This low-cost, fast, and green technology offers a new path for energy storage innovation.
Led by Prof. Prakash Chandra Mondal and team, the method uses rapid electrochemical modification to coat waste graphite rods with nitrogen-rich molecular films, boosting charge storage dramatically and improving battery life.
The modified electrodes show outstanding stability, retaining capacity over 10,000 charge-discharge cycles, making them ideal for next-generation rechargeable batteries and solid-state supercapacitors.
A smart step forward in turning waste into valuable energy resources!
