Pottery Workshop Blends Tradition with Modern Design at Rozi Shiksha Kendra
22 Jun, 2025 | IITK News
The Design Development Centre at RSK IIT Kanpur is hosting a six-day Pottery Workshop, from 9th to 15th June 2025, led by Prof. Mangesh Afre, a renowned ceramic expert from the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD), Jaipur. The workshop follows the concept of "One Artisan, One Product," aiming to help artisans focus on perfecting a single product with skill, innovation, and personal expression.
This unique workshop features clay sourced directly from the Ganga River, connecting the process to regional heritage. Pottery work here is done at a lower firing temperature than conventional methods, combining traditional practices with modern design sensibilities.
"We're working with artisans in remote Kanpur villages to introduce new technology and modern designs," says Prof. Mangesh Afre. “Typically, these artisans lack insight into city market trends. As designers, we bridge this gap by creating contemporary designs that cater to urban demands. Our workshop updates their skills in modern production methods. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi received their crafted items during his Kanpur visit, their morale was boosted. Seeing their products reach the PM's office is a proud moment, motivating them to innovate further.”Ms. Shailly Sangal carefully planned the workshop under the guidance of Prof. Afre. Its main objective is to help artisans discover and refine their unique strengths. Each participant selected a single pottery item to develop and craft with precision and attention to detail.
Potter Ram Chandra Prajapati, a participant in the workshop, shared his thoughts: “IIT Kanpur has given us a new opportunity, which is providing us with a new direction. Working on new designs feels good. The best part is that our fading art is being revived, which will benefit future generations. We will work with full dedication and take this craft forward.”
Over the six days, artisans are engaged in a series of hands-on sessions, including clay-forming demonstrations, design discussions, and product sample creation. Each artisan is working on creating five high-quality pieces, improving consistency, and enhancing overall craftsmanship. Participants learn key aspects such as shaping forms, finishing surfaces, and adding intricate details.
Beyond technical skills, the workshop fosters creativity, innovation, and a deeper understanding of design-led development. The Design Development Centre at RSK IIT Kanpur views this as a vital initiative toward sustainable growth and artistic empowerment for local craftspeople.
This pottery workshop is a step forward in preserving India's craft heritage while opening doors to new possibilities in design and entrepreneurship for rural artisans.
