The Cell for Differently Abled Persons (CDAP) at IIT Kanpur marked a significant milestone today with the launch of its first-ever comprehensive vision screening initiative for school students. The program, targeting children aged 5-15 years, brought together medical expertise and innovative technology to address early detection of vision problems.

The inaugural screening program, conducted at Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Kanpur, successfully evaluated 108 students using pioneering mobile technology and professional medical expertise. The initiative was spearheaded by renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Vineeth Kumar, in collaboration with Mr. Rajesh Sanal and Mr. Agniv Kumar.

Prof. Anubha Goel, CDAP Coordinator at IIT Kanpur said, "This vision screening initiative represents a crucial step in our mission of inclusive education and holistic student welfare. By implementing proven mobile technology solutions alongside medical expertise, we're making vision screening more accessible and efficient. This program demonstrates how academic institutions can effectively collaborate with healthcare professionals to serve our community's needs."

The screening process utilized PEEK Acuity, a clinically validated mobile application that revolutionizes vision testing through smartphone technology. The two-stage assessment included initial screening using the PEEK Acuity app, followed by comprehensive refraction tests conducted by qualified optometrists from Rama Medical College, Kanpur.

Dr. Vineeth Kumar, a consultant ophthalmologist and trustee of Dhwani Shristi Foundation, shared inspiring success stories from his Project Vision initiative in Karnataka, which has screened over 240,000 children and provided spectacles to more than 12,000 children in need. During the session, he also offered valuable insights into maintaining eye health in the digital age, emphasizing the importance of outdoor activities and proper eye care practices.

The event was attended by key institutional figures including Prof. Anubha Goel, CDAP Coordinator, Prof. Ashutosh Modi, CDAP Member, and Mr. Ravish Chandra Pandey, Principal of Kendriya Vidyalaya IIT Kanpur. Their presence underscored the institutional commitment to student health and welfare.
The success of this initial program has sparked discussions about expanding the initiative to reach more schools and communities in the region, reflecting IIT Kanpur's dedication to combining technological innovation with social responsibility.
