A two-day short course on “Sustainability in the Steel and its Refractory Industry” was organised at IIT Kanpur, during 15-16th December. Primarily intended for engineers from the steel and refractory sectors, the course focused on 'Decarbonisation options for the steel industry and its possible impact on the refractory linings'.

The sessions were led by Prof. Geoffrey Brooks (Joint Swinburne–CSIRO Professor of Sustainable Mineral Engineering, Australia), Prof. Dipak Mazumdar, Prof. Amarendra Singh, and Dr. Rahul Sarkar. The programme saw participation from 34 attendees, including 22 industry professionals, 11 graduate students, and one postdoctoral fellow.

The course concluded with an engaging panel discussion on “Impact of Decarbonisation and Likely Scenarios,” hosted by Prof. Ashis Garg, Professor and Head, Sustainable Energy Engineering Department. The discussion highlighted decarbonisation strategies tailored to the Indian steel industry, recognising its unique characteristics. IIT Kanpur looks forward to organising more such programmes to strengthen collaboration with the steel and refractory industry.
