It was a pleasure to host Prof. Abhay Deshpande (MSC2/PHY/1987) today. He is a Distinguished Professor at Stony Brook University, The State University of New York (SUNY) and Director, Science for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Founding Director of the Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science.

He was felicitated with the Distinguished Alumnus Award-2021, as he could not attend the award ceremony.

Prof. Deshpande received his master’s degree in physics from IIT Kanpur in 1987 and subsequently went on to earn his doctorate in Experimental High Energy Physics from Yale University in 1994. He conducted research at well known institutions such as CERN (Genova, Switzerland) and DESY (Hamburg, Germany), before becoming a Fellow at the RIKEN, BNL Research Center.

Prof. Deshpande has made key contributions in the fields of particle and nuclear physics and in particular, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), Precision Electro-Weak & Beyond the Standard Model Physics, and Science Communication and Innovation in Physics.

Prof. Deshpande also delivered Institute Lecture on the topic, Understanding the gluon: "The super-god particle" - that binds us all, Subtitle: The Science of future Electron Ion Collider (EIC).
