Science & Technology Council proudly inaugurated the Makerspace

19 Jan, 2026 | Alumni Stories

The Science & Technology Council proudly inaugurated the Makerspace, a landmark facility that was envisioned years ago and has now become a reality, made possible through the unwavering support of the Batch of 1991. This initiative directly addresses long-standing challenges faced by student teams, including the rising costs of manufacturing and the absence of inclusive, gender-neutral workspaces that foster collaboration and innovation.

Spanning domains as diverse as robotics, rocketry, formula vehicles, finance, machine learning, and web development, the Makerspace empowers student innovators with cutting-edge manufacturing tools, advanced testing equipment, and dedicated tinkering zones. By providing centralized resources such as precision machining, electronics workstations, prototyping equipment, and collaborative work areas, the facility significantly lowers entry barriers, accelerates development cycles, and enables teams to compete more effectively at both national and international levels.

Beyond infrastructure, the Makerspace represents a cultural shift towards openness, accessibility, and interdisciplinary problem-solving. It will stand as a vibrant hub where ideas are transformed into impact, and where students from every background can explore, experiment, and build without limitations.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Batch of 1991, Hon’ble Director Sir, Dean of Resources and Alumni, Dean of Student Affairs, IIT Kanpur Development Foundation, Institute Works Department members, and Prof. Amitabha Bandopadhyay for their vision, dedication, and tireless efforts in bringing this transformative project to life.
